Introduction to Time Line Therapy

We find ourselves together again, having stumbled upon the same stream of life. There's a serendipity to our frequent meetings - a synchronicity where one plus one equals more than two. We walk away from our frequent podcasting sessions happier than when we began, as if by magic or perhaps mindfulness, living life without expectations.

The Influence of Our Pasts: As humans, we are all products of our pasts, with self-concepts and identities that live in the stories of our lives. The emotional responses to past events become a lens that impacts how we perceive and live life in the present. Our behaviors are driven not just by random wounds but by underlying narratives that need to be examined.

Creating Timelines, Regaining Control: Everyone has a narrative, a story that often replays endlessly in our minds without resolution. To address this, we introduce the concept of creating a timeline of impactful people, places and events in our lives. With mindfulness, we can become observers rather than participants in these memories, accurately labeling them without judgment to regain control and power over the past’s influence. We begin taking ownership of our stories, consciously choosing to redefine rather than be defined by formative events.

Final Thoughts: We look to introduce the timeline concept, building on mindfulness skills from previous episodes to deal with automatic negative thoughts, low self-esteem and unhealthy self-concepts. We'll be diving deep in future episodes! For now, approach memories compassionately, both for others and for yourself.
