Fishing Without Bait 522: Respect Across Political Lines

In Fishing Without Bait 522, Jim Ellermeyer welcomes Missy Sorg back to the show for the beginning of a powerful conversation about politics, friendship, respect, and the emotional weight of being misunderstood.

Missy reached out to Jim because she wanted to talk about political differences in a way that many people struggle to do right now: honestly, openly, and without turning the other person into the enemy. She explains that she has lost friendships and connections because of political assumptions, and Jim recognizes that this conversation comes from a “bruised and hurt heart.”

One of the central ideas in this episode comes from a previous conversation between Jim and Missy: the ice cream metaphor. Jim had discussed disagreement as one person liking chocolate and another liking vanilla, but Missy reframed it by pointing out that both people still like ice cream. That simple shift becomes a way to talk about common ground. Even when people disagree on the flavor, there may still be a shared starting point.

Jim and Missy also discuss how the loudest political voices often come from the extremes, while many people live somewhere closer to the middle. They talk about social media, instant reactions, misinformation, and what Jim calls “contempt prior to investigation” — the habit of judging people before truly understanding what they think, feel, or believe.

The conversation also moves into patriotism, labels, and the way symbols can become weaponized. Missy shares her perspective on being a Republican, the assumptions people make about that label, and the importance of separating individuals from broad generalizations. Jim and Missy do not agree on everything, but they model the kind of discussion they are advocating for: respectful, direct, and grounded in curiosity rather than attack.

Later in the episode, Missy brings up women’s health and abortion through the lens of her own experience with fertility treatments. She discusses how deeply personal these issues can be, and how frustrating it is when women’s bodies are debated without enough attention to women’s lived experiences. The conversation touches on birth control, medical disparities, and why women’s voices need to be central in discussions about women’s health.

This is Part 1 of Jim’s conversation with Missy Sorg. It is not about winning an argument. It is about making space for a better one.
