Fishing Without Bait 528: Born Broken? Reclaiming Worth Beyond Original Sin
What happens when a person is taught that something was wrong with them before they ever made a choice?
That question sits at the center of Episode 528 of Fishing Without Bait. Jim Ellermeyer and Producer Mike examine the doctrine of original sin and the lasting effect that messages about guilt, shame, obedience, and unworthiness can have on a person’s life.
Jim begins by drawing an important distinction: guilt says that we did something wrong, while shame says that we are wrong. Healthy guilt can move us toward accountability, repair, and growth. Shame often sends us in another direction—toward hiding, fear, silence, and rejection of ourselves.
These messages can be especially powerful during childhood. A child may not understand the complexities of theology, but they can absorb the belief that they were flawed before they had an opportunity to act. Repeated through rituals, discipline, confession, and authority, that belief can become what Jim calls the “background music” of a person’s life.
The conversation also becomes personal. Jim recalls attending a baptism class after his daughter was born. When he was told that an unbaptized child could be denied paradise, he rejected the idea that his innocent daughter had entered the world spiritually stained. For Jim, that moment became a turning point.
This episode does not suggest that human beings are perfect or incapable of harm. Instead, Jim proposes a different foundation: original blessing. People can be unfinished without being cursed. They can make mistakes without losing their worth. They remain capable of accountability, compassion, repair, wisdom, creativity, and love.
That perspective changes how we respond to mistakes. Instead of shaming people, we can help place them in a position to succeed. Instead of teaching children that love must be earned, we can remind them that they were born worthy of love and encourage them to grow into that worth with honesty and compassion.
Jim closes with confidence statements listeners can carry into daily life: confidence in having a moral compass, knowing right from wrong, being dependable and honest, and treating people with courtesy and respect.
You are not required to be perfect to be worthy. Imperfection does not erase your humanity, and growth does not have to begin with shame.
