Fishing Without Bait 535: You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Your Neighbor with Monica Ruiz

You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Your Neighbor: Monica Ruiz of Casa San José Returns to Fishing Without Bait

What happens to a community when people become afraid to participate in everyday life?

That question sits at the heart of Fishing Without Bait Episode 535, as Jim Ellermeyer continues his conversation with Monica Ruiz of Casa San José.

This is Part 2 of their discussion, and Monica brings the conversation directly into the experiences of immigrant families in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

When Fear Changes Everyday Life

Monica describes families who are afraid of immigration enforcement and the uncertainty surrounding what could happen to them or their loved ones.

That fear can reach into seemingly routine moments: going to the grocery store, taking children to school, attending church, going to work, or simply moving through the community.

One of Monica's most direct observations captures the larger message of the episode:

“You shouldn't be afraid of your neighbor.”

The discussion isn't only about fear, however. It is also about what can be done to help.

The Barrier of Language

When Jim asks about the challenges facing immigrant families, Monica identifies language access as a major obstacle.

Navigating schools, government agencies, healthcare and other services becomes significantly more difficult when information isn't available in a person's language.

Casa San José works directly with people who need help reading mail, completing forms, navigating online systems and understanding resources available to them.

Monica also points to the need for mental-health care that goes beyond simply having a bilingual provider. Language matters, but so does cultural understanding.

As she says during the conversation:

“You can be bilingual, that doesn't mean that you can understand the culture.”

Supporting Families in Crisis

Casa San José's work also includes helping families facing detention and immigration proceedings.

Monica discusses fundraising to help with bonds, connecting individuals with legal assistance, and collaborating with immigrant-serving organizations throughout the region.

She explains how volunteer attorneys from other areas of law are being trained by immigration legal-service providers to assist with bond hearings and other cases.

The goal is not simply to respond to a crisis after it happens. Casa San José also works to help families prepare.

Through Know Your Rights sessions, legal screenings and preparedness planning, families can learn what options they have and make arrangements for children and loved ones should an emergency occur.

Humanizing Our Neighbors

Some of the most powerful moments in this episode move beyond policy and return to a much simpler idea: how we choose to view another person.

Monica asks:

“So what is it going to take to humanize us?”

Jim responds with his own measure of another person's character: Do they know right from wrong? Can they be dependable? Can they tell the truth? Do they treat other people with courtesy and respect?

Everything else becomes secondary.

It's a message closely connected to what Fishing Without Bait has explored for years: mindfulness isn't only about what happens inside us. It also affects how we see and treat the people around us.
